In October 2004 Dr. Rachel Holstead, was asked
by the Tom Crean Society to compose a piece of music to preserve and
promote the memory of Tom Crean. Members of the Society had previously
heard Rachels wonderful musical/video composition remembering the life
of the Blasket Islanders and another piece related to the Vikings and
the Tune Ships, please visit Rachels site for more information on her
work at www.rachelholstead.com . During
the December 12th 2005, midwinter dinner at the Brandon Hotel Tralee, Rachel
spoke and officially launched this wonderful project fit to commemorate Tom
Crean, Antarctic hero.
Rachel joined the Society trip to Antarctica in 2006 and availed of
the many opportunities to make recordings for possible use in the project.
While on board the Polar Star in Antarctica Rachel spoke by live link
